In 1996 a grain ship, “Bright Field,” was heading down the Mississippi River near New Orleans, when it lost control, veered toward the shore and crashed into a riverside shopping mall. The impact demolished parts of the wharf and injured 116 people. According to the Coast Guard investigation, the ship’s owner and crew had failed to repair long-standing engine problems. This is a clear example of not doing what you should do and receiving the consequences of bad decisions.

The Devil deceived Eve into thinking that there would be no consequences for eating the forbidden fruit (Gen. 3:1-7). God said, “But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, ye shall not eat of it lest ye die” (v.3) The Devil said, “Ye shall not surely die.” (v.4) Eve dilly-dallied with the temptation and contemplated the possibilities that the Devil had suggested and threw away all restrain and ate the fruit!  Why?  The Devil deceived her into thinking that there would be no consequences for sin.

The Devil continues to lie to us today and tells our society that a little sin won’t hurt, a little indulgence is not a problem, a little transgression will never hurt anybody! The Devil tells us that we are only human and go ahead and enjoy sin. The Bible says, “The way of the transgressor is hard.” ( Prov. 13:15)

Our society believes that it can live in disobedience to God’s will by practicing homosexuality and never suffer the consequences. The scriptures teach that there will be consequences for our actions. “Be not deceived: God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth unto his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption: but he that soweth unto the spirit shall of the spirit reap eternal life.” (Gal. 6:7-8) This basic principle applies to the physical world and spiritual realm as well. The word, “mocked” is a Greek word (mukterizete:) which means to turn one’s nose up at God. The point is that if a person sows to the flesh (homosexuality and sinful living) and turns up his nose at God, he shall go the way of all flesh, -- die and face the judgment of God where there will be consequences. (reap destruction – Gal. 6:8)

The scriptures emphasize the consequences of sin in other verses. Ezekiel said, “The soul that sinneth, it shall die.” (Ez. 18:4) Paul said, “The wages of sin is death.” (Rom. 6:23)  Over and over, again and again, the Bible under all circumstances, emphasizes that we reap what we sow and that sin is always followed by consequences.

There is rebellion in the hearts and in the behavior of many people in our society today. In view of the fact that sin will always have consequences, what can we predict for the future? According to the basic law of sowing and reaping, the answer can best be given in the words of the prophet Hosea, “They sow the wind and they shall reap the whirlwind.” (Hos. 8:7) There is one time of sowing (while alive), and there will be two times of reaping. We reap in this life and also reap beyond this life in the hereafter. Sin brings forth its consequences both here and hereafter.

People may do things without realizing the consequences of their actions, but one day there is going to be an accounting! (Rev. 21:8)

A recent Gallup Poll of U.S. adults indicate that voters’ two most important issues in our next presidential election are the economy (92%) and jobs (89%). Economists now predict that Obama will leave office with an accomplishment of being the first U.S. president to only achieve a 3% economic growth during all of his eight years in office!

Our present anemic growth is dire news with only 38,000 jobs created in May and spells big trouble for Hillary Clinton who will be running on Obama’s economic record.  The economy has created, on average, a million jobs a year under Obama but needs about 1.8 million annually just to employ our new graduates.

The economic facts show that the median household income has remained virtually unchanged since 2000. About 14.8 million Americans have left the workforce since Obama took office. Healthcare costs under Obama have risen 150% since 2009. Student loan debt has jumped by nearly 70% under Obama.

There are plenty of other worrisome signs that the economy isn’t rebounding normally. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of Americans living in poverty has jumped from 39.8 million in 2008 to 46.7 million today. Since Obama took office, 12.4 million Americans have joined the food stamp rolls, and the workforce participation rate has fallen to its lowest level since March 1978. When Obama took over, our Federal national debt was $10.6 trillion, and now it is $19.5 trillion.

Obama’s defenders point out that the economy has created millions of jobs during his tenure. But the facts are that most of these jobs were generated in the health sector that was adapting to Obama’s reforms. Experts warn that if healthcare costs continue to rise, there will be massive layoffs in that industry! Like it or not, Hillary will be running on Obama’s economic record.

Like it or not, each person will stand before God at the final judgment on their individual record! Some day we shall all stand before God to be judged, and in that day, John described the events that will happen. “The books were opened, and another book was opened, which is the Book of Life” (Rev. 20:12). This is an accurate record by an infallible God, and there will be no possibility for “juggling” of books nor any manipulation of accounts to cover our mistakes like many corrupt politicians try to do.

It is a wonderful thing to know that the names of the saved are written in such a permanent record book and that God keeps the records! Because the names of the saved are in the Book of Life (Ex. 32:32; Phil. 4:3; Luke 10:17-20), it follows that those whose names are not in that book will be lost. “And if any was not found written in the Book of Life, he was cast into the lake of fire” (Rev. 20:15).

Entries in this “Book of Life” are only for those who are saved from sin. Therefore, you must meet God in obedience to His gospel, if you are to be enrolled there! God’s plan of salvation is very clear:  Hear (Rom. 10:17), Believe (Mark 16:16), Repent (Acts 2:38), Confess (Rom. 10:10), be Baptized (Acts 2:38), and remain faithful (Rev. 2:10). Also, one can have his name blotted out of the Book of Life if he/she is overcome by sin (Rev. 3:4-5).

It is only through obedience to Him that the pages of His book are open tous (I Peter 1:22). There are many who claim to love Jesus but ignore the test that He gave: “If you love me, ye will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Like it or not, we will stand on our own record at the day of Judgment (II Cor. 5:10).
